The One Little Thing You Do Can Keep the Darkness at Bay!
“Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.”
Francis of Assisi
Small Changes We Can Make
- One of Satan’s greatest tools is contention. In the words of Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf, “Stop It.”
- Ask and work for the gift of charity.
- Implement the “Big Three”, as our Stake calls it, daily personal and family scripture study, daily personal and family prayer, and weekly family home evening.
- Ask, “What do I need to stop doing?” and “What do I need to start doing?”
- Recognize there are things you cannot do on your own. Ask for the enabling power of the atonement.
- Learn to listen to the Spirit.
- We all have agency — Use it for good.
Find a Daily Victory
Sometimes we feel like we fail so often it is hard to start. I have a close friend who lives with depression. She is either brilliant or barely able to get out of bed. On bad days she said her goal was to get up and brush her teeth. If she brushed her teeth that would usually lead to brushing her hair or maybe doing laundry. But sometimes, just brushing her teeth was the victory. Whether you suffer from depression or not, find the one small victory you can commit to.
“How you deal with life’s trials is part of the development of your faith. Strength comes when you remember that you have a divine nature, an inheritance of infinite worth. The Lord has reminded you, your children, and your grandchildren that you are lawful heirs, that you have been reserved in heaven for your specific time and place to be born, to grow and become His standard bearers and covenant people. As you walk in the Lord’s path of righteousness, you will be blessed to continue in His goodness and be a light and a savior unto His people (see Doctrine and Covenants 86:8–11).
